Nothing's Sweet

She said, "I love you,"
I told her to prove it.
And oh, the sweet nothings that followed.
She said, "You're beautiful,"
I asked her if she was blind,
And all she did was laugh.
She said, "Let's run away together,"
I said to her, "You're nuts,"
And we dreamed the day away.
She said, "You're my life raft, love,"
I told her, then never let go,
But eventually she did just that.
She said, "This will never work,"
I begged her for a reason,
But all I heard were fading footsteps.
She said, "Let's still be friends,"
I said to her, "Of course,"
But inside I didn't know if I could.
She said, "My heart belongs to her now,"
I couldn't say a word, it hurt too much.
And I realized that she had gotten it backward;
She was my life raft,
And I'm the one who's drowning now.
